2008 Quilt Camp at Sea Cruise to Alaska August 10-17, 2008
Ship: Aboard Holland America Lines luxurious ms. Westerdam
Ports of call: Glacier Bay; Juneau, AK; Sitka, AK; Ketchikan, AK; and Victoria, B.C.
Featuring quilting instructors including Jean Wells, Becky Goldsmith, Laura Denison, Elizabeth Spannring, Roxanne Carter, Sharon Gunkel, Kathy Scott, and Lisa Kirby Optional fishing expeditions will be available for cruisers in the port cities of Juneau and Sitka through Holland America Line (and the spouses of quilters on past cruises have highly recommended these expeditions)!
Expect the unexpected…. while sailing through the spectacular glacier wilderness where a massive glacier caves, a bald eagle soars above, a humpback whale clears the water and the night sky awakens to waves of color. This cruise immediately follows the Association of Pacific Northwest Quilters (APNQ) 2008 Quiltfest in Seattle. For details on the 2008 Quiltfest, visit www.APNQ.org and plan to join us August 8-10, 2008 at Quiltfest and then sail away on the cruise!!
We will sail from Seattle aboard Holland America Line's beautiful vista class ship, the ms. Westerdam, with the breathtaking scenic beauty of Alaska awaiting us in Glacier Bay, Juneau, Sitka, Ketchikan, and Victoria. If you have not previously sailed to Alaska, you will soon discover why this cruise destination is one of the most popular and why so many cruisers return to Alaska again and again.........
Rates shown below do not include the fuel supplement of $5.00 per person per day that is being added to all sailings on or after February 1, 2008 due to escalating fuel prices. This supplement will appear separately on balance invoices in order for it to be adjusted if the fuel supplement is decreased or increased prior to the final payment date for this cruise.

Description of the class project |
| Jean Wells Portraits from Alaska | Simple machine appliqué techniques, free motion stitching, and bead embellishment will be explored in this simple multi layered quilt. Jean has chosen appliqué motifs that will remind you of your quilting cruise. The small pictures are completed as mini quilts then stitched onto a free motion quilted quilt. The second quilt layer creates a mat like frame for the small portraits. You can see examples of this technique in Jean’s newest book from C&T Publishing, Portraits from Nature. |
| Becky Goldsmith Blue Blossoms on a Hot Day (hand appliqué) | Students will learn how to needleturn appliqué the Piece O' Cake way in this class for all quilters with a vibrant quilt designed for this cruise. You will learn easy template making, how to make and use an overlay for appliqué, and, most importantly, the invisible appliqué stitch. Becky will help each student to perfect her (or his!) invisible appliqué stitch while working on cutaway appliqué, outer points, and curves. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced appliquér, this class is for you! |

Kathy Scott Aurora Borealis Mariner’s Compass
|
The Mariner’s Compass is a classic pattern traces its roots to a maritime navigational device used centuries ago. That makes it a wonderful pattern for our class at sea, one that will conjure memories of your time onboard, reminding you of all the good times you had and good friends you’ll keep forever. In the late sixteenth century sailors used the mariner’s compass for navigation. The center star is symbolic of the sailor’s “lodestar” - the star which guided the way. Ours will be a simplified version of the classic pattern, and a good foundation for you to build more intricate patterns on your own. Kathy Scott will show you paper piecing techniques that will make your points come out perfectly! |
